27-year-old Berekhti Burro is one of 700 pregnant women among the new arrivals of refugees seeking shelter in the rapidly growing tent-town of Um Raquba refugee camp in Sudan. Burro, nine-months pregnant, was forced to flee intense fighting near her home in Humera in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, trekking for hours in the blazing sun to safety.
Ethiopian dissident party the TPLF dismisses Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s declaration of victory i n their northern region. On Saturday night, Ahmed declared military operations in Tigray “completed” after the army claimed control of the regional capital Mekele, a city of half a million before the conflict broke out three weeks ago.
